What is ADHD?

Different emotions representing the energies of ADHD.

What is Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder?

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain regulates attention, impulses, activity level and motivation. It affects how consistently the brain can direct itself toward what actually needs to happen, not how intelligent, capable or hardworking someone is.

ADHD is not a lack of effort, discipline or care. It's a difference in brain wiring, and it shows up differently depending on the person, their age, and how well they've learned to compensate for it.

In Australia, over 1 million people have ADHD, with boys 3 times more likely  to be diagnosed than women.

What ADHD affects

ADHD commonly affects:

  • Attention regulation — not an inability to focus, but difficulty controlling where focus goes and how long it holds
  • Impulse control — acting, speaking or deciding before fully thinking it through
  • Time perception — often called "time blindness," making planning and estimating genuinely difficult
  • Emotional regulation — emotions that arrive quickly and take longer than expected to settle
  • Working memory — holding information in mind long enough to use it
  • Motivation — driven more by interest and urgency than by importance alone

These traits exist on a spectrum, and everyone experiences some of them occasionally. ADHD is diagnosed when they're persistent, significant, and genuinely affecting daily life across more than one setting.

The Three Presentations of ADHD

  • Predominantly inattentive — difficulty sustaining attention, organising tasks and following through, without significant hyperactivity. Often missed, especially in girls and women.

  • Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive — restlessness, impulsivity and difficulty staying still, with attention difficulties less prominent.

  • Combined presentation — a mix of both, the most commonly diagnosed presentation overall.

How does ADHD present?

ADHD doesn't look the same for everyone. It can present differently depending on age, gender, and life stage:

  • In children, it's often visible as hyperactivity or disruption in the classroom
  • In teenagers, particularly through high school, the same traits often become less visible but more internally exhausting
  • In adults, it's often less about visible hyperactivity and more about follow-through, time management and burnout
  • In women specifically, inattentive ADHD is frequently missed in childhood and only recognised decades later

Recognising ADHD in Yourself or Your Child

If some of this sounds familiar, the next step is usually looking more closely at the specific symptoms of ADHD, and speaking with your GP about a proper assessment.

Self-diagnosis from a checklist isn't a substitute for a full clinical picture, but recognising the pattern is often what prompts people to seek one out.

Where ADHD Coaching fits in

A diagnosis, or even just a strong suspicion, explains what's going on. It doesn't automatically change your day-to-day habits.

ADHD coaching is practical, forward-focused support that helps translate an understanding of ADHD into strategies that actually work for how your brain operates, whether that's for adults, students, or as a parent supporting a child.
